Unemployable Britain?

The 2011 CIPD Resourcing and Talent Planning survey revealed that nearly three quarters of Britain’s business’ are struggling to fulfil their requirements. So how with a near record breaking 2.51 million unemployed Britons is this possible?
The current climate makes it difficult on both sides. Employers understandably are looking for candidates who have the most relevant and substantial experience for their roles but are they always the best people for the job?
In any employment situation it comes down to matching the individual with the role and the company. This is the crucial aspect of recruiting that can be overlooked and result in disappointment on both sides.
Work Ethic and Values
An employee’s work ethic and values are a crucial aspect to consider. They may look great on paper but if they don’t share the same vision and ethics as the business you may find that they won’t quite live up-to expectations. Work ethic and values are not easy to instill but training on new systems or software is much more achievable.
Transferrable Skills
Candidates that may not at first glance look quite right on paper could be exactly what you are looking for. Consider each application and their transferrable skills, don’t simply discount someone as you may find you are missing out on a great employee.
Practical Assessments
Consider using practical assessments as part of your recruiting process, this will ensure that you can determine the best candidate for the job. Again someone who looks great on paper may not be as suitable as a potential candidate with transferrable skills.
Wage Setting
Be aware that when it comes to recruiting you get what you pay for. This isn’t to say you need to offer candidates astronomical salaries or bonuses, but to ensure you have the best chance of recruiting the right person for the job offering a reasonable salary package comparable to other business’s in the industry is important. Under paying staff leads to a feeling of under appreciation and over payment can lead to complacency.
Job Descriptions
When writing your job spec for a new or existing role be realistic. Employees want to be engaged with their work which includes having a good work flow but asking an employee to do two peoples work will lead to a high staff turn-over. If you are struggling to assess the needs of the position consider asking for input from other staff members or meet with your recruiter and let them do the hard work for you.
