Listening is a Gift

listening

Written by Pete Scotcher

Have you ever been to a friend for help and heard a long list of their problems in response? Have you been the friend who jumped in with advice as soon as you heard the problem?

I have experienced both. I have heard a problem from a close friend, felt uncomfortable about their distress and jumped in with advice. My intentions were good, I wanted to help and be a part of the solution.

I was responding to my needs. I was expressing my wish to be a helper, and I was managing my discomfort.

In my work as a therapist and facilitator, I work hard to remain quiet. Leaving spaces after a person has spoken, allowing the words to be heard and reflected upon. After facilitating a group last year my colleague and I came away from a session saying, “That was great, it felt so easy”. On reflection we saw that we had said very little and allowed the group to work through ideas, they found great ways to stay healthy.
