New Outlook for a New Year...

Posted in Candidates, Employers on Dec 01, 2011 by Richard Hayden

We cannot help but be barraged by the constant media stream of information reporting the rise in unemployment figures, gas prices soaring and the cost of living going up, but is it all doom and gloom?

Whilst the figures the media report are factual at their root it is worth considering the context and the source the information is being reported from. Newspapers and News Bulletins survive on circulation and ratings, they require a receptive audience. We’ve all been tempted by the latest reports of secretive super injunctions or celebrity gossip. It’s a simple fact that the media utilise; we are intrigued by sensationalised story telling.

Whilst it is determinably easier to recognise the ‘spin’ on the latest celebrity gossip it can be somewhat trickier to put economic news into context. Yes unemployment figures have risen but the retirement age has also increased, as has the National Minimum Wage along with a multitude of other events which when not presented alongside this factual information can paint a bleaker picture than really exists.

Whilst it is important to recognise changes in our society and economy it is equally important to place these news grabbing headlines into context. If we fail to do this we face being overwhelmed and creating more problems for ourselves.

So at one minute to midnight on the thirty-first of December when you are struggling for that New Year’s resolution, consider a new outlook for the new year.
