It is fair to say that at some point in our careers we will all have experienced a negative working atmosphere; this is an awful feeling and a terrible way to spend your working week.
Research conducted by the HSE (Health & safety Executive) has shown that one of the major causes of work related stress is the impact of managers and their skills to manage staff and stress in the work place. Particularly in already stressful economic times a positive working environment can make a real difference to staff and employers alike.
A good atmosphere can improve staff absence, staff turnover, productivity and quality. So how can we create a better working environment, well communication is key.
Top Tips for Employers
- Communicating: communicate changes and make your team aware of what others are doing so no one is duplicating work. A brief weekly team meeting is the best way of doing this as emails can be miss-interpreted and it allows you to gauge your staff’s responses.
- Workloads: make sure your team is doing just that working as a team and supporting one another as well as the business.
- Prioritising: ensure everyone is on the ‘same page’ and that priorities for the forthcoming week are clear and focussed. This also ensures everyone is aware of their responsibilities, avoiding confusion or resentment.
- Acknowledgments: employees are 3 times more likely to stay with a company if they feel that they are valued and acknowledged.
These may seem like arbitrary actions but they can make a real difference in improving working relations and the office environment.
