A recent survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation has found that attitude is the most important factor for employers in the selection process.

Graduates looking to secure themselves their first career starting job, must have the right attitude according to a new report by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. The survey asked employers across a range of sectors what were the most important factors for them taking on new staff, with the candidate's attitude emerging top of the pile.

The survey covered around 200 employers and focused on employers looking to employ young people specifically. The survey, entitled the Job Outlook Survey, found that a candidate’s attitude to be the key measure for ensuring success. This was by far the top result, with 47% of those questioned viewing this as the most important factor.

Attitude was followed by the applicant's level of qualification, which was rated by 20% of employers as the most important factor. Many of the other qualities and attributes favoured by employers were predictable, with 10% wanting work experience as a key feature, 7% wanting the candidate to demonstrate an understanding of their business while a lowly 4% of employers judged applicants mainly by their academic results.

Speaking about the results, Kevin Green the Chief Executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, thought the survey could provide food for thought for graduates approaching application processes. Kevin Green said 'Qualifications can be a good indicator of ability but our survey shows employers place a high value on attitude.'

Our advice is young people need to think about how they project a positive, can-do attitude when applying for jobs.
