They are more and more frequently being used by employers at interview stage to identify candidates who are most suitable for roles and who will work best within the company’s existing team.
There are two main types of psychological test - tests of ability, aptitude or attainment, which are known as measures of maximum performance and those designed to assess personal qualities, such as personality, beliefs, values and interests and to measure motivation or drive. These are known as measures of typical performance.
Psychometric tests are nothing to be afraid of. They allow an employer to compare candidates and employee’s in a quantitative way.
- They can help to inform the decision making process in recruitment.
- They can be used to identify areas where existing and potential staff require more training
- And can be used to identify potential career progression for an employee, dependant on their strengths and weakness’.
The most important thing to remember for candidates and clients alike is that Psychometric testing plays a proportional role. An employer will never base their decision to hire someone purely on a Psychometric test. The type of Psychometric testing used is designed to give a brief overview of a candidate, not a comprehensive and detailed picture which can only be built up through the Interviewing process.
If you are asked to take a Psychometric Test prior to Interview it is likely that they will discuss the results of the test with you. This means they may base some of their questions around areas of strength or weakness that have been identified by the test.
Do not panic, if you are prepared for your interview you will be able to answer all of their questions. Remember they are not trying to catch you out they are talking to you about you and your skills. No one knows you better than yourself, so be prepared, remain calm & collected and you won’t have a problem.
