Britain's got Talent...?

Posted in Employers on Jun 28, 2011 by Richard Hayden

With three-quarters of UK organisations reporting difficulty in attracting professionals with the experience and skills they require, where are Britain’s Talented Professionals?

Is this a result of a shrinking talent pool or are roles becoming increasingly niche?

The 2011 CIPD Resourcing and Talent Planning survey reveals that Britain’s business  are under pressure and despite continued high un-employment rates UK organisations are struggling to fulfil their requirements.

Managers have had their recruitment and HR budgets slashed and have found that competition has intensified to recruit experienced professionals with the skills sets their business needs. In addition many experienced employees have the added incentive of remaining with their current employers as they offer stability and security in uncertain times.

So how can managers recruit the talented employees they need?

  • By focussing on promoting and creating a positive working environment, you can not only increase the productivity of your current staff but will attract talented new individuals.

  • Identifying potential; by identifying and developing existing staff through training you can release their potential and improve moral. When short listing candidates for new positions in your organisation, match not only on skill set but potential and work ethic. You can train an individual to have the skills you require but you can-not change their attitude or work ethos.

  • Consider mentoring schemes; mentoring utilises your current employees knowledge and skills whilst giving them additional responsibility and room for growth in their role. Whilst simultaneously giving new employees valuable insider knowledge and building their skill set to match your specific needs.
